Start button and taskbar

At the bottom  of your screen is the taskbar. Right click it to adjust properties or change your date and time. At the bottom left is the Start button, which you can use to quickly start a program or to find  files or  help. Right click to change the properties.

You can use My Computer to see everything you have stored in your comp, documents program files, and drives (top)

 

Windows Explorer

In Windows Explorer, you can surf your folders like you do the web and navigate up and down through the files. you can open two windows to quickly drag and drop files when moving them.(top)

To find Windows Explorer, click the Start button, and then point to Programs.
Shortcut menus

You can right click any item and see the shortcut menu. This menu contains common commands. Uninstall, copy , paste move yada yada

Copy between folders

Right click and drag your mouse over the item you want to copy so its highlighted. Great now right click and select copy. right click inside the folder you want to copy to and select paste. yer done eh.

To CREATE a Folder

Right click on your desktop or in the appropriate folder....you can also do this while your saving a document just right click inside the save as pop up window same as you would your desktop and you can add the folder you need.  the folder will be called "new folder" right clik on it and rename it. That's it Cheeko. (top)

 

To COPY between folders.

 Double click on the My folder icon that contains the file you want. Select the file you wish to copy. Select Edit (at the top of your screen to the left). Select Copy. Double click on the Another Folder Icon. From the menu bar select paste. (top)

 

To MOVE a file between folders.

Double click on the My folder icon that has the file you want to Move. Select the file your going to copy. From the menu bar select Edit. Select Cut. Double click on the Another Folder Icon. From the menu bar select paste. (top)

 

To DELETE a file from a folder.

Click on the file , when its highlighted right click and select delete. Or highlight it and press the delete button on your keyboard eh.

To rename the My folder folder.

Right click the mouse on the Folder. Select Rename. Type the name you want to call it.

To rename a file.

Select the file you wish to rename. Type your new name and press the Enter. that's it eh.

To Search for Files and Folders.

 Click the start button.  Click Find. Select Files or Folders. Click the find all files created  box.   Click the up arrow to search the number of months to Select the type of document you are looking if you know what you are seeking or leave the setting all files then click the Find Now button.(top)

 

A LOOK AT WINDOWS EXPLORER

Click the Start button.Select programs.Click Windows Explorer to load it. Are ya looking? ohhh ahhh.(top)

 

Opening Recently saved documents.

 Click the start button. Click documents.Click on one of the recently saved documents to open it.(top)

 

To Clear the recently modified documents list.

This action does not delete these recently modified documents.

Right click the Taskbar.Select properties.Select the Start menu programs tab.Click Clear and click OK this clears all the recently modified list of documents.Click the Start button and select Documents to see that
.           it is now empty.

To Use The Recycle Bin

You will need to have a test file in the 'my folder' folder to complete this.

Double Click the My Folder folder icon.Select the file that is in the folder.Right click that file.Select Delete and click Yes to confirm deletion. Double click the Recycle Bin icon from the Desktop and see your file you just delete From the menu bar select Undo delete. your file is back
 in the spot where you originally deleted it from.

Practical Examples

Most Software you purchase for your computer can be installed easily and safely by using the following method.(top)

To copy a program to your computer (into hard disk C:)

Through STARTUP,  SETTINGS CONTROL PANEL &, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon.

use the following steps insert the floppydisk or CD you wish to install into its drive .

1. Press the start button take the mouse to settings and then to control panel and click mouse a Window called Control Panel will appear on the screen double click the mouse on the Icon called Add & Remove programs.

2. Up comes another screen have a read of its Directions then click once with the mouse on the Install Button Up comes yet another window read the instructions and click the mouse on Next now usually windows will find the install program or the EXEcution file itself and all you have to do is click the mouse on the Finish Button and it is done.

Now if you would like to try example two at home yourself that's fine, however only choose an easy program first, all Microsoft CD programs are easy to install. Choose Microsoft Works. Or MS Encarta 95 Do not worry to much about getting into trouble it is impossible to get these two wrong just follow the on screen instructions and follow your nose.(top)

 

Auto-Start

A lot of computer users like to have specific programs startup as soon as they turn on their computer For example if you were in business you may want your accounts program and maybe WORKS to open with the turning on of the computer. In order to do this follow the steps that follow.

To start a program each time Windows starts.

Click the Start button, and then point to Settings. Click Taskbar, and then click the Start Menu Programs Click Add, and then click Browse.Locate the program you want to start, and then double-click it.Click Next, and then double-click the StartUp folder.Type the name that you want to see on the Startup menu, and then click .... Finish.

If Windows prompts you to choose an icon, click one, and ,       then click Finish.(top)

 

Copying and Moving Files

Copying and moving files with Windows 95/98/2000/XP is just Drag and Drop. To copy or move a file follow these steps.

Select the Files you would like to Move or Copy.

Click on the selected file(s) and drag them to their destination. you can drag a file or folder into another folder. Windows follows the guidelines below when deciding whether you wish to Move or Copy.

To use drag and drop instead of menus

In My Computer or Windows Explorer, find the file or folder you want to work with.Make sure the place you want to drag the file or folder to is visible. Drag the file or folder to the destination.(top)

 

To start a program by using the Run command

Click the Start button, and then click Run. In the Open box, type the location and name of the program you want to start.(top)

 

To select multiple files and folders

In the folder window, hold down the CTRL key, and then click each item you want to select.

To select all the files and folders in the window, click the Edit menu, and then click Select All.

To select a group of files that are next to each other, hold down the mouse button and drag a rectangle around the files you want to select.
